Tucked away in a steep wooded valley, Berry Pomeroy Castle is the perfect romantic ruin.Within the 15th-century defences of the Pomeroy family castle, still displaying a wall painting of the Three Kings in its gatehouse chamber, looms the dramatic ruined shell of its successor, the great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours. Begun in c. 1560 and ambitiously enlarged from c. 1600, their mansion was intended to become the most spectacular house in Devon, a match for Longleat and Audley End. Never completed, and abandoned by 1700, it became the focus of blood-curdling ghost stories, recounted in the audio tour.Woodland walks from the car park (including steep tracks) provide fine views of the ruins from below.

The Devon Wildlife Centre and Hospital ...is a New centre of excellence for the care and rehabilitation of sick, orphaned and injured wildlife, it is not a zoo. There are some residents, mainly orphans reared here and animals unsuitable to be released back to the wild. As the seasons change, so do the animals and birds admitted into the hospital. Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth

NAVAL BASE LAUNCHES FREE TOURS BEHIND THE WALL Monday to Thursday. Tours commence at 10:30am and 1:30pm and last approximately 2 hours, to book - Telephone 01752 55 23 26  This number is for an answer machine. Leave your details and someone from the Navy will call back.

The tours, run in partnership with DML, are free of charge and give anyone with an interest in what happens behind the Naval Base wall and in the Royal Navy around the world the rare opportunity to see a working base in action.

The tours will be carried out by bus with Royal Naval personnel giving the commentary and answering questions and will include a visit on an operational warship or submarine and the historic parts of the base. The dynamic nature of the Royal Navy and the Naval Base means the identity of the nominated ship on the day is not known until shortly before and is always dependent on operational demands.

Visits begin at a newly created reception area at Mount Wise in the historic Admiralty House. The reception area features a static and audio visual display telling the story of the Naval Base, bringing visitors right up to date and beyond into the future, outlining activities of all aspects of the Royal Navy and DML.

Both the ships and the displays are regularly up-dated and changed, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the Naval Base and so making it a different experience for repeat visits.

Goape, Haldon Forest, Exeter

‘high-wire forest adventure’ which means we build giant obstacle courses up in the trees using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels made of wood, rope and super-strong wire, and top it all off with the country’s best zip lines

We then kit people out with harnesses, pulleys and karabiners, give them a 30 minute safety briefing and training and let them loose into the forest canopy, free to swing through the trees. Of course, instructors are always on hand, regularly patrolling the forests (not in monkey suits unfortunately!)

The result is spectacular. The Go Ape experience gets the adrenalin pumping, gets people out of their comfort zones and above all (no pun intended), it’s just great fun.

We're open from February to November, but we close our forest doors during December and January .

(Weekends in February and March)

Golf

Bigbury Golf Club, Bigbury-on-Sea
The Course - Bigbury has been providing a challenge for golfers of all abilities for 85 years. Today, its 18 holes total 6,061 yards for men, 5,568 for ladies. Par is 70 and 72 strokes respectively.  The fairways are wide and the greens fast, but club selection is complicated by sea winds and by awkwardly placed trees and bunkers.
Practice - You can practice your putting on a dedicated green, your short game in the chipping zone and your long game on the full length practice ground

Bovey Tracey Golf Club
A Challenging 9 hole course with 2 long par 5's guaranteed to test your golf

Churston Golf Club, Churston, Brixham
The total length of the course is 6208 yards, with a S.S.S. of 72. Length is not an issues at Churston as hard running fairways gives players more distance than normal. The issue will be the accuracy and control of your second shot which is paramount if you wish to score well.  Churston calls for a great variety of shots and the views are stunning, I can ensure any visitor will go home with found memories of both the course and its vista.

From here you take on the newer holes (2nd - 10th) ranging from inviting par 3's to the challenge of the double dog leg Par 5 4th. Be sure to take a moment on the 7th fairway and take in the spectacular view back to the Hotel with the beauty of Dartmoor beyond.

Situated right on the coast, the course is a mix of links and cliff-top terrain. The course is well-draining and rarely suffers from frost, so it is rarely closed due to bad weather. From the Kingsbridge to Salcombe road take the turning to Thurlestone, or South Milton, and continue through either village until you reach the sea.

The course measures 6230 yards from the White Tees, whilst the ladies are faced with 5538 yards. Spectacular views may be enjoyed from every hole on the course, which provides a challenge to all levels of golfer, especially when the wind blows.

Torquay Golf Club is a delightful parkland course with stunning views over Lyme Bay to the east and Dartmoor to the west. The course is an excellent and enjoyable test for our visiting golfers who are always made most welcome. Our course is unique - 9 moorland holes and 9 parkland holes. It’s very much a course of two halves and there is nothing else like it in Devon! The moorland nine holes offer stunning views of the Devonshire countryside towards the sea 10 miles away and has no bunkers and no trees. The parkland nine is a complete contrast with its lush fairways bordered by hedgerows and trees. You really do get two courses for the price of one! Situated just a mile off the A38 Devon Expressway and midway between Exeter and Plymouth, Wrangaton Golf Club is accessible and easy to find. We are a members club, run by the members for the members. We welcome visitors anytime and hope to see you soon.

In Britain, Kents Cavern is by far the most important prehistoric cave dwelling and is known around the world for its record of prehistoric human occupation. Guided tours around the caves run regularly every day and take you on an incredible journey back 400 million years to when Kents Cavern Rock was formed at the bottom of a warm tropical sea.  You will discover how the cave and the spectacular formations formed over 2 million years. You will feel, smell and experience the cave just as our prehistory ancestors did as they sheltered in the cave, lighting fires and hiding from Mammoths, Hyenas, Cave Lions, Cave Bears and Saber-toothed cats during the Ice Age.

Learn To Sea is an award winning marine education facility in South Devon, recently featured on BBC televisions Springwatch 2009. Our coast is such an amazing resource which we must treasure and enjoy! Learn to Sea offers the opportunity to do just that! Through engaging rockpool sessions, beach activities and play, school children are taught curriculum focused subjects and marine conservation at South Milton Sand’s “sea school”. During the Summer holidays, we also offer the same opportunities for children from 4 years old who would like to find out more about Devon’s beaches at Summer Sea School.

Learn to Sea will:

  • Allow children the chance to use the exceptional South Hams coastline to engage them in every day science whilst teaching curriculum units and having fun.
  • Offer children the opportunity to appreciate all the wonderful things the sea can offer us and our planet and to explore rockpools safely.
  • Raise awareness of the dangers and pressures on our local coast and seas and how they can be prevented.
  • Discover what nature can teach us!

Lukesland has 24 acres of woodland gardens, with flowering shrubs, trees and a wealth of wild flowers. It is in the beautiful setting of a small valley with a brook cascading from its source on Dartmoor through ponds and over waterfalls towards the River Erme.

Powderham Castle - Powderham Castle, Kenton, Exeter EX6 8JQ  Tel: 01626 890243

Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park setting on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone's throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter. This year is extra special as it is the Castle's 50th anniversary, the Courtenay family have been welcoming visitors to the Castle since 1959. In that time in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories. This year we expect to welcome back some of those visitors, along with many new ones, to enjoy a wonderful enchanting day out at one of the loveliest places in Devon. Very little of the Castle itself has changed since those early days, but there are now many more attractions in the grounds for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

Powderham Castle was chosen from over 200 applicants as a finalist in the 'Tourism Oscars' - The South West Tourism Excellence awards, achieving 3rd place overall. This is a reflection of the many improvements the attraction has seen over the past 2 years; the children's play area, activity trails and the Victorian Kitchen, all enhancing our visitors' experience.
