Tucked away in a steep wooded valley, Berry Pomeroy Castle is the perfect romantic ruin.Within the 15th-century defences of the Pomeroy family castle, still displaying a wall painting of the Three Kings in its gatehouse chamber, looms the dramatic ruined shell of its successor, the great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours. Begun in c. 1560 and ambitiously enlarged from c. 1600, their mansion was intended to become the most spectacular house in Devon, a match for Longleat and Audley End. Never completed, and abandoned by 1700, it became the focus of blood-curdling ghost stories, recounted in the audio tour.Woodland walks from the car park (including steep tracks) provide fine views of the ruins from below. 2011/2012 opening times: Dec 19 - 30 closed, Dec 31 open 10.00 - 4.00 Jan 1- 6 closed, Jan 7 - 31 Mar Mon - Fri closed, Sat & Sun open 10.00 - 4.00

Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth
NAVAL BASE LAUNCHES FREE TOURS BEHIND THE WALL Monday to Thursday. Tours commence at 10:30am and 1:30pm and last approximately 2 hours, to book - Telephone 01752 55 23 26 This number is for an answer machine. Leave your details and someone from the Navy will call back.
The tours, run in partnership with DML, are free of charge and give anyone with an interest in what happens behind the Naval Base wall and in the Royal Navy around the world the rare opportunity to see a working base in action.
The tours will be carried out by bus with Royal Naval personnel giving the commentary and answering questions and will include a visit on an operational warship or submarine and the historic parts of the base. The dynamic nature of the Royal Navy and the Naval Base means the identity of the nominated ship on the day is not known until shortly before and is always dependent on operational demands. Visits begin at a newly created reception area at Mount Wise in the historic Admiralty House. The reception area features a static and audio visual display telling the story of the Naval Base, bringing visitors right up to date and beyond into the future, outlining activities of all aspects of the Royal Navy and DML. Both the ships and the displays are regularly up-dated and changed, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the Naval Base and so making it a different experience for repeat visits.

‘high-wire forest adventure’ which means we build giant obstacle courses up in the trees using ladders, walkways, bridges and tunnels made of wood, rope and super-strong wire, and top it all off with the country’s best zip lines We then kit people out with harnesses, pulleys and karabiners, give them a 30 minute safety briefing and training and let them loose into the forest canopy, free to swing through the trees. Of course, instructors are always on hand, regularly patrolling the forests (not in monkey suits unfortunately!) The result is spectacular. The Go Ape experience gets the adrenalin pumping, gets people out of their comfort zones and above all (no pun intended), it’s just great fun. We're open from February to November, but we close our forest doors during December and January . (Weekends in February and March) |

Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park setting on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone's throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter. This year is extra special as it is the Castle's 50th anniversary, the Courtenay family have been welcoming visitors to the Castle since 1959. In that time in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories. This year we expect to welcome back some of those visitors, along with many new ones, to enjoy a wonderful enchanting day out at one of the loveliest places in Devon. Very little of the Castle itself has changed since those early days, but there are now many more attractions in the grounds for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Powderham Castle was chosen from over 200 applicants as a finalist in the 'Tourism Oscars' - The South West Tourism Excellence awards, achieving 3rd place overall. This is a reflection of the many improvements the attraction has seen over the past 2 years; the children's play area, activity trails and the Victorian Kitchen, all enhancing our visitors' experience.
